Rustem’s recording of the complete Rachmaninov Études-Tableaux (Chandos) was selected by BBC Radio 3 reviewer David Nice as the finest available in Building a Library, broadcast on July 5th 2008. Naming him as the final choice ahead of formidable competition, Nice praised his ‘total mastery’ and ‘mercurial’ playing, and declared that he ‘seems to me to come closer to the more classically contained emotion of Rachmaninov the pianist and Richter’.
